How to track phone calls without a tracking number

Do you want to track phone calls from your website without dealing with a call tracking number?

If so, then you’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’m going to show you how to setup website phone call tracking so that you can properly track your conversions and marketing performance.

The tools that you will need

First things first, you’ve got to have the right tools. Fortunately, if you’re a webmaster then this stuff should be pretty simple, and you will already know your way around them.

  1. Google Analytics
  2. If your site is running on a CMS such as WordPress, then you’ll need login access to that CMS.
  3. If your site doesn’t use a CMS, then you’ll need login access to your site cPanel.

Follow these steps to setup phone call tracking

1. Preparing the links on your website

This part might take a bit of work. You need to find every occurrence of your phone number on your website, and make sure that it is a proper “tel” link. For example, here is Proper Web SEO’s phone number: (914) 361-5752. As you can see, it is not clickable. So this must be changed to a proper link, like this: (914) 361-5752.

Here is the HTML code you will need to accomplish this.

<a href=”tel:914-361-5752″>(914) 361-5752</a>

Simply replace the phone number after “tel:” and also within the angle brackets. Do this for every phone number button or text on your website. Make sure that the href is the exact same for every phone number link. In our case it is always “tel:914-361-5752” and never “tel:9143615752”. Even though both will work, the latter will mess things up with our phone call tracking.

2. Setting up a phone call conversion in Analytics

Now that every phone number occurrence is a proper link on your website, you’ll need to create a new conversion goal in your site’s Google Analytics account.

Follow these exact steps.

  1. Login to Google Analytics.
  2. On the bottom left panel, click on the “Admin” icon.
  3. On the rightmost section, under “View”, click on Goals.
  4. Click the “+ New Goal” button.
  5. Under Goal setup, select “Contact us” under Inquiry.
  6. For goal description, enter “Phone Call” as the name, and “Event” as the type.
  7. For goal details, set Category equals to “Phone”, Action equals to “Click” and Label equals to “Tel” and leave Value empty.
  8. Click the Save button on the bottom to complete the goal creation process.

3. Adding the old Analytics code to your website

Now we’ll need to get into the website to add some Javascript code to every page of your website. Login through your control panel or CMS.

If you use WordPress, then get yourself a plugin such as this one:

You’ll need to add the old Google Analytics (analytics.js) tracking code to the top, or header of all your pages. This will not work with Google Tag Manager. This step is very important.

The code you will need to add looks like this.

<!-- Google Analytics -->
(i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o),

ga('create', 'UA-XXXXX-Y', 'auto');
ga('send', 'pageview');
<!-- End Google Analytics -->

You will have to replace the ‘UA-XXXXX-Y’ with your actual UA code, which can be found in your Google Analytics.

Once this is done, reverify that your Analytics account is still receiving views. Then, move onto this next and final step.

4. Adding the phone call conversion tracking code to every page

The last thing you have to do is add this code to each web page on your website. You should add this code below the Analytics code mentioned above. We add it after the footer.

Here is the code.

var element = document.querySelectorAll(“a[href=’tel:914-361-5752′]”)[0];
var elementIsClicked = false;
function clickHandler(){
elementIsClicked = true;
ga(‘send’, ‘event’, ‘Phone’, ‘Click’, ‘Tel’);
element.addEventListener(‘click’, clickHandler);

You will have to replace the “tel:914-361-5752” code in the first line with your phone number. Make sure it matches the “tel” code as you set it up when preparing the links.

After you add this code to every page, then you should be all set! Clear your site cache and give it some time. Test it out by clicking on the phone number links and checking your Analytics for conversions on ‘Phone Call’.
